Psychology Application Frequently Asked Questions

Who do these new requirements apply to?

The new application procedure applies to students who meet ALL  three of the following criteria:

(1) entered UCLA as a freshman (not transfer student) AND

(2) entered UCLA Fall 2006 and after AND

(3) are pursuing the Psychology Major (it does not apply to other majors such as Psychobiology & Cognitive Science)

When do I have to complete all the prep courses and

Every student interested in the Psychoogy Major must submit an application by the June 2009 deadline.  It is recommended that all coursework is completed by Spring quarter.  However, for the 2009 application cycle requests for extensions to complete prep coursework by the end of Summer 2009 will be considered.

When is the earliest I can apply?

Applications are online beginning Spring quarter at http://www.psych.ucla.edu/application.  The application deadline is June 5, 2009.   

How many times a year will applications be taken?

Once a year, at the end of Spring quarter. 

What criteria will be used to evaluate applications into the   major?

It will be based on your GPA in the preparatory courses for the pre-psychology major.  Please note that only prep courses taken at a UC will calculate into this GPA.  Your Degree Progress Report (DPR) automatically calculates this GPA, so please refer to your DPR to attain your prep GPA—it is listed as your “Requirement GPA in Units Completed”.

Will my overall UCLA GPA be considered?

No, we will not look at your overall UCLA GPA, just your Pre-Psychology prep-for-major GPA.

Is there a minimum GPA required to apply? 

You must have a minimum of a 2.5 prep-for-major GPA to be eligible to apply. Please note that it is a competitive application process to earn entry into the major.  Admission decisions are based solely on the current year’s pool of applicants.

Since the application is due in June and I will still be in progress with my Spring quarter classes, will the grades for these classes be considered?

Yes!  We wait until your Spring grades are available before calculating your Pre-psychology prep GPA and processing your application. 

Is there any way to know for sure if I will get into the major?

 Students who have a 2.9 prep-for-major GPA or higher and have met all other pre-psychology requirements will be GUARANTEED entry into the major.  Students with guaranteed admission are still required to submit an application by the application deadline.
