Flat Panel TV with Apple TV - user guide

Introduction

With Apple TV, you can stream the contents of your newer model Macbook or iOS device (either iPhone or iPad) to the 80” Sharp TV without connecting any video or audio cables.  

(NOTE:  Unfortunately, Apple TV will not work with Windows PCs.  Please visit the Sharp TV User Guide for connecting Windows systems to the TV).

Prerequisites

1.  **Password to private Apple TV wireless network in Room A279.  Please contact the helpdesk at (310) 794-9327 or submit a helpdesk request to obtain the password well in advance of the scheduled event**

2.  One Apple TV Airplay capable device with its wireless turned on.

a.    2011 or newer Mac computers with OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” or higher.  Please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 to verify compatibility.

b.    iPhone/iPads: please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4437 to verify compatibility.

Procedures

Two separate procedures are outlined herein: one for Mac computers, the other for iOS devices.

A.  Mac Computers

(Note:  Screen captures below are from a Mac running OS X 10.9 “Mavericks.”)

1.  As noted previously in the “Prerequisites” section, please contact the helpdesk at (310) 794-9327 or submit helpdesk request for the password to the Apple TV wireless network well in advance of the scheduled event within said classroom).  

2.  Locate A/V Control Center panel on podium and press the "POWER ON" button to turn on the TV.

3.  Press the "APPLE TV" button on panel.  (NOTE:  screen could appear blank as the Apple TV device may still be in sleep mode.  The following steps will wake it).  

4.  On your Mac, connect to the wireless network named A279 using the password provided by the helpdesk.

5.  Once wireless connection has been established, locate the AirPlay icon located in the toolbar (indicated by the red arrow in the screen capture below).

6.    Click on aforementioned AirPlay icon to invoke following menu, and select “A279 Apple TV” 

7.  A code will appear on the TV screen.  At the same time, the following prompt will appear on thecomputer screen.  Enter the code then click “OK.”  

8.  Click the Airplay icon again to invoke menu and select one of two display modes:

a.  Mirror Built-in Display:  Mac’s desktop will be mirrored onto TV.  Selecting this option will also allow for minor adjustment of TV’s desktop size to either match Mac’s display or the TV itself.

b.  Extend Desktop:  Mac will display the content that is dragged to TV’s screen.  This feature is most useful when using PowerPoint in Presenter mode with notes on one screen and the slideshow on the other.  

9.  If necessary, audio adjustments can be made by pressing the "VOL UP", "VOL DOWN", or "VOL MUTE" buttons on the A/V Control Center panel. 

10.  To disconnect from the Apple TV, click the AirPlay icon again and select “Disconnect AirPlay Display”.  

11. Press "POWER OFF" on panel to turn off TV.

B.  iOS Devices

1.  As noted previously in the “Prerequisites” section, please contact the helpdesk at (310) 794-9327 or submit helpdesk request for the password to the Apple TV wireless network well in advance of the scheduled event within said classroom).  

2.  Locate A/V Control Center panel on podium and press the "POWER ON" button to turn on the TV.

3.  Press the "APPLE TV" button on panel.  (NOTE:  screen could appear blank as the Apple TV device may still be in sleep mode.  The following steps will wake it).

4.  On iOS device, connect to the wireless network named A279 using the password provided by the helpdesk.

5.  Once device is connected to network, swipe up from bottom of device’s home screen to invoke the Control Center as shown in the following screen:

6.  Tap the “AirPlay” icon.  The following screen will appear.  Tap “A279 Apple TV”.

7.  A code should appear on the TV screen.  At the same time, the following screen will appear on the device.  Proceed to enter the code then tap “OK.”

8.  Once the correct code has been properly entered, enable the “Mirroring” option as shown hereunder then tap "Done".  Apple TV will then display exactly what is currently onscreen on the iOS device to TV.  Audio (if any) will also stream through the TV’s built-in speakers.  

9.    If necessary, audio adjustments can be made by pressing the "VOL UP", "VOL DOWN", or "VOL MUTE" buttons on the A/V Control Center panel.

10.  To disconnect from the Apple TV, swipe upwards from bottom of iOS’ screen to invoke the Control Center then tap on “Airplay”.  The screen previously shown in step no. 8 will appear.  Tap on “Headphones” (or “iPad” or some other variant, depending on device) to stop mirroring.  

11. Press "POWER OFF" on panel to turn off TV.
