Peter Fisher receives the inaugural Jenessa Shapiro Memorial Graduate Award
Congratulations to Peter Fisher (Social Area) on receiving the inaugural Jenessa Shapiro Memorial Graduate Award. This award honors the values and ideals of the late Professor Jenessa Shapiro, our beloved colleague. The purpose of the award scholarship is to facilitate graduate students’ research at the intersection of psychology and social justice, including (but not limited to) the study of stigma, prejudice, discrimination, diversity, intergroup relations, and/or underrepresented social identities.
Kimberly Martin receives the University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship
Congratulations to Kimberly Martin (Social Area) for receiving the University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship. The UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage PhD recipients from groups historically underrepresented in U.S. higher education or underserved by academic research generally to pursue academic careers at the University of California.
Prof. Patricia Greenfield Receives Award for Distinguished Contributions to Developmental Science
Congratulations to Distinguished Professor Patricia Greenfield for being selected as one of two winners of the 2022 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Developmental Science from the Jean Piaget Society for her groundbreaking and ongoing contributions to the field. The Jean Piaget Society was established in 1970 and has an international, interdisciplinary membership of scholars, teachers and researchers interested in exploring the nature of the developmental construction of human knowledge.
Prof. Janet Tomiyama Receives Healthy Campus Initiative Award
Congratulations to Associate Professor Janet Tomiyama for being selected to receive the Jane B. Semel Healthy Campus Initiative Appreciation & Recognition Award for 2022. Janet was selected for her dedication and commitment to improving the health and well-being of the UCLA community through her involvement in the development of the Food Studies Graduate Certificate Program, teaching about the emotional impact of eating on health, and multi-disciplinary research around the intersection of eating, stress, and health.

We study the neural pathways that contribute to forming different types of memories. We use modern neuroscience tools that allow us to record and manipulate specific neuronal populations in the awake, freelymoving (and learning!) rodent during formation and recollection of new memories.
Psychology Staff Spotlight Award – Natalie Pham Schottler
We are happy to announce that Natalie Pham Schottler, our Psychology 116 Laboratory Assistant, has been selected to receive the Psychology Staff Spotlight award for this quarter for her exceptional work and long-term dedication to the Department. Natalie has worked in the Department for 19 years. She meticulously assists students by setting up laboratory exercises and providing technical help each quarter. She is responsible for the technical aspects of the neuroscience laboratory courses. She assists in preparing and documenting lab exercises and manages the course website each quarter. Her expertise and diligence in the neuroscience laboratory courses ensure Psychology 116 courses run smoothly every quarter. Natalie has recently joined the Operations Team and will continue to provide her expertise to neuroscience laboratory courses. Congratulations on this recognition and thank you for all your hard work and dedication, Natalie!

Prof. Jennifer Sumner Awarded 2022 Herbert Weiner Early Career Award
Congratulations to Assistant Professor Jennifer Sumner on being selected as the 2022 recipient of the American Psychosomatic Society’s Herbert Weiner Early Career Award. The Weiner Award was established in 1991 to recognize individuals who, early in their career, have contributed significantly to the field of psychosomatic medicine and show substantial promise of continued meritorious academic accomplishments in the field. The award will be conferred at the Society’s annual meeting in March.

Congratulations to Kimberly Martin (Social Area) for being named a recipient of the 2021 Taylor M. Brown Award. The award, established in honor of biosciences graduate student Taylor M. Prof. Keith Holyoak to be Awarded the 2022 Warren Medal
Congratulations to Distinguished Professor Keith Holyoak, who will be awarded the 2022 Warren Medal from the Society of Experimental Psychologists (SEP). This high honor in experimental psychology has been awarded since 1936 and will be conferred this year at the SEP meeting in early May. Our department’s previous recipient of the Warren Medal was John Garcia in 1978, and Bob Bjork won the Norman Anderson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society in 2012.
