Declaring the Pre-Major

Please note that starting June 10th, the Psychology Department will NOT process any major changes. If you are interested in switching your major to one of the following: Pre-Psychology, Pre-Psychobiology, or Pre-Cognitive Science, you may contact us after July 8th, 2024.

Students who entered UCLA as freshman can message the Psych Advising Office via Message Center on MyUCLA 🔗 to declare the pre-Cognitive Science major once they are eligible (see major worksheet for eligibility criteria). Pre-Cognitive Science students may enroll in some core and elective courses. Refer to the “Class Notes” for each course and enrollment information webpage 🔗 to learn more about enrollment for pre-majors vs majors. 

Declaring the Major

Please note that to declare your major with our department you will need to send us a message via Message Center after July 8th, 2024, once your final grades for ALL preparation courses have been posted to your DAR. Note: there is always a one-quarter delay between finishing your major preparation courses and having declared major standing for enrollment.

Students finishing their preparation coursework in Spring 2024, will continue to have pre-major standing for Fall 2024 enrollment. As a result, we will not begin to process any messages related to major declarations until after July 8th, 2024. This policy is strictly enforced and there are no exceptions.

Once all final grades for all preparation courses are posted to the DAR, students can message the Psych Advising Office via Message Center on MyUCLA 🔗 to declare the Cognitive Science major.

Declaring the Pre-Major

Students who entered UCLA as freshmen Fall 2023 and after must finish all preparation courses for the Cognitive Science major and submit the application to the Cognitive Science major in Fall quarter of their third year.

Declaring the Major

Declaring the Specialization

Cognitive Science majors may petition to declare the Specialization in Computing once they have major standing by contacting the Psych Advising Office via Message Center on MyUCLA 🔗

NOTE: The Undergraduate Council of UCLA’s Academic Senate voted to remove the Specialization in Computing for the Psychology and Psychobiology majors effective Fall 2023. Psychology and Psychobiology majors currently in the specialization or admitted to UCLA prior to Fall 2023 are still eligible to pursue the specialization. However, enrollment is not guaranteed in courses required for the specialization.
