Dr. Paquette-Smith conducts research in two distinct areas of cognitive science. Her basic research program (described here) seeks to understand how children and adults perceive and produce speech. Her applied research examines how teachers can optimize student learning in the classroom.

Inspired in memory of Dr. Michele Alexander, this competitive and prestigious award was established in 2005 to recognize early career excellence in scholarship as well as in service.

Congratulations to Liz Bocanegra (Clinical Area) for being awarded an honorable mention from Mexico’s National General Directorate for Policies in Health Research 2021 Convention for an article she co-authored titled “Incidence and recurrence of depression from adolescence to early adulthood: A longitudinal follow-up of the Mexican Adolescent Mental Health Survey.”
UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute Graduate Fellowship Recipients
Congratulations to Brittany Drake (Clinical Area), Laura Hazlett (Social Area), Lee Lazar (Social Area), Kristen Lee (Health Area), Sophia Pashtunyar (Developmental Area) and Sara Schiff (Clinical Area), who received the UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute Graduate Fellowship. The UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute is an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to research, education, and practice of kindness. The fellowship will provide support to enhance graduate research and training on topics relating to kindness.
Three Professors Included on Clarivate Analytics List of Most Highly Cited Researchers
Congratulations to Profs. Carrie Bearden, Michelle Craske, and Steve Reise for being included on Clarivate Analytics list of the most highly cited researchers. The researchers on the list rank in the top 1% in their fields, based on their widely cited studies. The 2021 list was produced using research citations from January 2010 to December 2020. Article by Prof. Paul Abramson Receives Media Attention
An article by Research Professor Paul Abramson and undergraduate psychology major Sienna Bland-Abramson, titled “Racial Animus, Police Corruption, and a Wrongful Conviction of Murder: Complex PTSD and the Vestiges of Anguish,” is being featured by the UCLA Newsroom. The case involved a wrongfully convicted young Black man who was incarcerated in Northern California maximum security prisons for 20 years before his conviction was overturned and he was exonerated. The restitution litigation that followed in its wake lasted for an additional 10 years after the conviction was overturned.
Prof. Lauren Ng Receives 2021 ISTSS Distinguished Mentorship Award
Congratulations to Assistant Professor Lauren Ng on being selected as the recipient of the 2021 International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) Distinguished Mentorship Award. Lauren was nominated by students in her lab for this honor, which is awarded to individuals who consistently serve as effective mentors for students in the field of traumatic stress and who effectively guide students throughout their professional training in a multifaceted partnership sustained by mutual respect and concern.
